Fifth ranked Tigers too much for Colonels in 41-21 loss

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre football welcomed its highest ranked opponent in years when the no. 5 Trinity Tigers came to Andy Frye Stadium. The Colonels held the lead for most of the first half, but the Tigers took over in the second half and won 41-21.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- Trinity took the opening kickoff and got inside the Centre 30 before the Colonels tightened up on defense. Armon Wells got into the backfield to stuff a run for a loss on first down, and then on fourth down, Colton Wessel came up with a huge sack to turn away the first drive for the Tigers.
- A long punt return by Scotty Brown gave Centre great field position on their second drive, but it only took the Colonels one play to score as Nick Osterman found a wide open Daylin Huff streaking to the end zone on a deep ball for a 38-yard touchdown to put Centre on the board.
- On the next offensive play, Wessel made another big impact play for the Centre defense as he tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage that wound up in the hands of Tyler Jiles on a diving interception that gave Centre the ball back on the Trinity 10.
- Osterman quickly took advantage of the turnover as he went through his progressions and hit Sam Murray with a strike in the back of the end zone to give the Colonels a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Trinity got on the board with a field goal early in the second quarter and then got the ball back in good field position for their next series, but with the Tigers just outside of field goal range, they elected to go for it on fourth down and Dallas Douglas turned the Tigers away with a sack.
- Late in the second quarter, Trinity had a quick strike drive, needing just two completions to go 51 yards and score a touchdown to cut the Centre lead to 14-10.
- The Colonels had enough time to mount another drive before halftime and got inside the Trinity 30, but disaster struck as the Tigers intercepted a pass and raced all the way back for a score to take a 17-14 lead at the break.
- The Tigers scored again on a 50-yard run to take a 24-14 lead after their first series of the third quarter. Centre got the ball back and advanced into Trinity territory after a long run from Dameon Jones Jr. and a pass interference call. The Colonels then reached into the bag of tricks and called a flea flicker as Beau Buchanan, playing in relief of an injured Osterman, connected with Christian Billiter for a 39-yard touchdown that cut the Trinity lead to 24-21.
- From there, the Tigers took over on defense, allowing just three first downs the rest of the way and outscoring Centre 17-0, including a pair of long touchdown drives.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Trinity outgained the Tigers 450-262 on the day as they held the ball for nearly 36 minutes.
