BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Centre football team made its last road trip of the season as they headed south to face Birmingham-Southern. The Colonels fell to the Panthers by a score of 42-21.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels held possession for most of the first quarter, but two long drives produced zero points as Centre was held up short of field goal range on the first drive and missed a field goal on the second.
- BSC's Jon Lewis was the story of the second quarter, as he rushed 50 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the period and ran for two more long scores, including a 76-yarder as the Panthers took a 21-0 lead going into the halftime break.
- The Panthers got the ball to start the third quarter and extended their lead with a long scoring drive to go up 28-0.
- Centre's offense finally got something going late in the third quarter as they strung together a couple of first downs, and as the game entered the fourth quarter, the Colonels entered the red zone.
Nick Osterman found
Christian Billiter for a four-yard touchdown pass to get the Colonels on the board, but the Panthers blocked the PAT attempt.
- BSC was threatening to score on their next drive, but
Parker Guilaume picked off a pass in the end zone. The Colonels pinned BSC deep after a great punt from
Nick Whitlow, but Lewis turned the corner on a sweep and raced 90 yards for a touchdown that made it 35-6.
- Later in the fourth quarter,
Beau Buchanan entered the game at quarterback and led the Colonels on another scoring drive, as he made the Bowling Green connection with
Scotty Brown for the second Centre touchdown.
Daylin Huff caught the two-point conversion attempt and Centre now trailed 35-14.
- Whitlow delivered a picture-perfect onside kick that Centre recovered with six minutes left and Buchanan quickly went back to work, once again finding Brown in the end zone to cut the deficit to two scores.
- BSC recovered the second onside kick attempt and effectively put the game away with a long touchdown drive in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
