Comeback falls short for Centre men in season opener against Berea

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's basketball opened its 2022-23 season by welcoming the Berea Mountaineers to Alumni Gym. The Colonels played well in the second half, but dug too deep of a hole in the first half and lost by a score of 64-58.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels held an early lead before Berea outscored them 15-0 over a six-minute stretch in the first half.
- The Mountaineers took their biggest lead of the night at 28-12 thanks to hot early three-point shooting before Centre rallied with a 9-2 run capped off by consecutive baskets by Cade Stinnett.
- Centre stayed in the game at the free throw line, getting into the double bonus in the final minutes of the half and converting from the line as Berea took a 34-24 lead at the break.
- The Colonels cut the lead to seven at 42-35 as Hunter Coleman picked apart the Berea 1-3-1 zone and found Stinnett for a corner three. Following a timeout, both teams went cold and Centre stayed cold as Berea extended the lead to 52-37.
- Centre fought back once again as Chez Moore started to catch fire off the dribble and the Colonels' pressure defense forced Berea into consecutive ten-second violations.
- In the final minutes, the Colonels cut the Berea lead to 61-56 as a Coleman steal led to a runout dunk by Moore, but that was as close as it got the rest of the way as the Mountaineers made enough free throws to hold onto the win.
