Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Seth Stogsdill, Assistant Director of Athletics Communications

Late drought costs Centre men in loss at Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's basketball hit a long dry spell in the second half that was the key determining factor in a 57-49 loss against the Spalding Golden Eagles on Saturday afternoon.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The first half was closely contested for the duration as both teams struggled offensively, Centre with missing close shots and Spalding with turnovers.
- In the closing minutes following a timeout, Carter Baughman went on a personal 6-0 run as he knocked down consecutive three-pointers to turn a three-point deficit into a 25-22 halftime lead for the Colonels.
- The Colonels played well in the opening minutes of the second half as they extended their lead to 31-24 after Pete Knochelmann found Cade Stinnett for a driving layup.
- With 12 minutes left in the game, Centre hit its longest cold stretch of the season as they were kept off the scoreboard for the next nine minutes. Spalding gradually regained the lead and eventually pulled ahead by as many as 13 points at 49-36.
- Thanks to a full court press and some missed free throws from Spalding, the Colonels were able to make a late rally and cut the deficit to five as Stinnett put back a missed free throw, but that was as close as they got the rest of the way as Spalding made free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Stinnett finished with game highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. His 13 boards were a season high and the first double-double by a Centre freshman since all-time rebounding leader Tyler Wesley did it against Oglethorpe in 2013.
- Baughman was the only other Centre player to score in double figures, scoring 14 with four made threes.
- Centre shot 25 percent from the floor in the second half and was 1-16 from downtown and 5-15 from the free throw line after the break.
