ROME, Ga. – Centre volleyball began play in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament with a quarterfinal battle against Hendrix and came away with a 3-1 victory, the first conference tournament win for the Colonels since the 2016 season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels dominated the opening set as they scored the first three points of the match and never looked back, building the lead throughout and scoring the last seven points to win 25-11 as
Isabel Thornton sealed the victory with a block.
- The second set was more closely contested with both teams making big runs in the early stages. Down the stretch, the Colonels used a 10-5 spurt to force a set point and
Ally Knueven delivered the final kill on a 25-20 win for the Colonels.
- The Warriors controlled the early portion of the third set with their backs against the wall, taking their largest lead at 17-11. Centre battled back after a timeout to cut the deficit to one. Hendrix regained the advantage and forced a set point, but the Colonels fought off two set points as the set advanced past the 25th point. The Warriors eventually extended the match with a 27-25 win.
- In the fourth set, Hendrix used an early 6-0 run to take the lead, but the Colonels responded with eight straight points of their own. Hendrix fought back to tie the score at 18-18 with a 7-1 rally, but Centre stayed cool under pressure, scoring five of the next six to take the lead for good and win by a score of 25-21.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Knueven led all players with 15 kills on the day, followed by
Emily Goddin with 14. Goddin also had an excellent defensive day at the net, tying for a game high with six blocks.
- After reaching a career milestone with her 2,000th assist in the regular season finale,
Meredith Phillips paced the Colonels with 24 assists today.
- The Colonels held an 86-64 edge over the Warriors in digs, led by
Madi Barron with a game high 32.
June Padilla and
Lily Hendricks also hit double figures in digs.
NEXT UP
The Colonels will play Birmingham-Southern in the semifinal round on Saturday at 4 PM. The Panthers were the only team to beat the Colonels twice during the regular season.
