DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's basketball team opened conference play on Saturday, taking on the Sewanee Tigers. The Colonels pummeled the Tigers by a score of 80-49, moving to a 1-0 record in conference play.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- In the opening quarter,
Emma Rose Vincent initiated a 6-0 offensive run with a jumper in the paint. Following, the Colonels would go on to put up 17 additional points, giving them an 11-point edge entering the second period.
- Sewanee's Faith Humphrey led the Tiger's attempt at a comeback but it wouldn't be enough. The Colonels would answer nearly every Sewanee basket with two additional buckets of their own. A final three-pointer from
Makya Grinter would give Centre their biggest lead yet entering the third quarter.
- After the halftime break, seniors
Payton Herold and
Piper Hensley landed three uninterrupted long balls, pushing the Colonels 20 points ahead and forcing the Tigers to call a time-out. Coming out of the break, Grinter, the game's steal leader, forced a turnover keeping the momentum swinging in Centre's direction. The Colonels would continue to trail away from Sewanee as the two teams entered the final quarter.
- Centre's defense had their best performance in the game's final ten minutes. Recording 10 rebounds, three steals, and a block, the Colonel's kept Sewanee to just 10-points. To close the game, a fastbreak lay-up from
Anna Thomas would solidify the final score at 80-49.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Having three different players in the double figures, the Colonels shot 57% in the paint.
Natalie Duggins and
Bailey Rucker both put up 12 points while Peyton Harold, the game's top scorer, put together 13 points.
- Centre simply outperformed Sewanee off the glass, nearly doubling the Tiger's 21 rebounds with 40.
Katelyn Stiltner and Herold were the statistical leaders for the Colonels, each having 6.
- Centre's defense kept Sewanee to 21 percent behind the arc and a more notable 32 percent in the paint.
- Centre's offense preformed their best game so far this season. They set a season high shot percentage of 57 percent in the paint. From the field, the team bucketed seven of their 11 shots, setting another season high of 63 percent from behind the arc.
