Second quarter surge pushes Warriors past Centre

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Centre women's basketball team (7-5, 1-0 SAA) looked to bounce back in day two of the Transylvania Classic on Friday, taking on the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors (6-5) for the final day of competition. A second quarter drought would plague the Colonels and they wouldn't be able to claw back in, falling on a final score of 68-45.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels would break the ice in the contest, taking a quick 6-2 lead in the game's first three minutes off back-to-back baskets from Bailey Rucker and Natalie Duggins.
- Centre would slam the final three points in the first quarter of action, freshman Makya Grinter nailing a driving layup and Rucker sinking a free throw for a four-point lead.
- The Warriors would come out swinging on the Gold & White in the start of the second quarter, scoring three consecutive baskets to take a two-point lead.
- Centre wouldn't be able to stop Wisconsin Lutheran before halftime, outscoring the Colonels 9-1 before the end of the second quarter.
- The third quarter would continue to not fall in favor of the Gold & White, the Warriors holding Centre from scoring until Duggin's layup with 5:30 left in the third.
- Down 52-29 at the start of the fourth quarter, The Colonels would ignite their offense by outscoring Wisconsin Lutheran 11-6 in the final five minutes of action, Anna Thomas sinking a deep ball and a layup during the stretch. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Grinter's 10 points on Friday marks the second time in three games she's put up double digits in the statistical category.
- The Colonels' 28 rebounds compared to the Warriors' 38 is only the third time this season they've been out-rebounded.
- Katelyn Stiltner's pair of blocks in the contest marks the first time the sophomore has had multiple in a single game.
- Centre continued their streak of success on the free throw line, their 11 makes at the line mark the sixth-straight contest the team has achieved 10 or more in a single game in the category.
- Bailey Rucker was selected to the 2022 Transylvania Classic All-Tournament team, averaging 11 points, two rebounds and a steal in the series' two contests. 

UP NEXT
The Colonels' will compete in conference play for the remainder of the season, their first game of the stretch being a home contest against the SAA-favorite Rhodes. The Gold & White will take on the Lynx at 6 p.m. ET in Alumni Gym on Friday, Jan. 6.
