BUENA VISTA, Va. – Centre men's lacrosse went toe-to-toe with Southern Virginia Thursday evening, eventually falling by a 14-11 score inside Knights Stadium.
The Colonels (4-4) got behind early and remained on the heels of the Knights (5-2), but the home side hung on during a tense fourth quarter to earn a win in the first ever meeting between the two programs.
HIGHLIGHTS
- For the third straight game, Centre capitalized with an early goal as
David Caldwell hit the back of the net on an assist from
Ethan Hanna in the opening minute.
- The host Knights scored three unanswered before defenseman
Graham Robbins was able to end the run with a goal. SVU ended the quarter ahead 4-3 after a late score from
Will Hubbs.
- Centre had a turnover or failed to clear on its first three possession of the second quarter, helping the Knights extend their lead to 8-4.
- Caldwell scored twice more in the period, the latter goal of an assist from
Duncan MacDonald, and Centre trimmed the lead to 8-6 by the half.
- Both sides tallied three third-quarter goals.

Ridr Knowlton each scored for the Colonels, while keeper
Sammy Zickel totaled five saves to help maintain a two-goal deficit into the fourth.
- Centre had more total shots and won five of six faceoffs in the fourth, but the Knights did just enough to stay ahead of the Colonels.
- Hubbs worked his magic for a pair of unassisted scores in the fourth, and Centre ended the game with a flurry of shot attempts, but it wasn't enough overcome SVU's advantage.

- Zickel finished with 15 saves, most in his young career.
- Caldwell led Centre with four goals, followed by Hubbs (3) and Knowlton (2).

Dylan Croft won 15 of 21 faceoffs, also leading the Colonels with seven ground balls.
Alex Mozingo claimed four faceoffs, as well, and as a team Centre took 19 of 29.
