BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Centre men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in the Southern Athletic Association as they won a thriller at Birmingham-Southern by a score of 13-12 in overtime.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
-
Will Hubbs opened the scoring on the day with a quick goal just 46 seconds into the contest. After the Panthers tied it up, Hubbs and
David Caldwell combined for three straight goals to put Centre up 4-1 five minutes in. BSC slowly chipped away and eventually tied the score with three minutes left, but
Paxton Brown scored a little over 30 seconds later to give the Colonels a 5-4 lead after one period of play.
- In the second quarter it was the Panthers who were in control in the first seven minutes, scoring a pair of goals to take their first lead of the game at 6-5. Centre quickly responded as
Noah Malubay found
Max Speers for the equalizer, and then Hubbs and Brown each scored off of ensuing faceoff wins. BSC got one back in the final minutes, but the Colonels maintained their one-goal lead into the halftime break.
- After the intermission, the Colonels stormed out of the gates with two quick goals. Hubbs provided the first and then Caldwell scored the second off an assist by
Mick Ginnity to equal the largest Centre lead. BSC won the next faceoff and quickly scored to cut the deficit to two, but could only manage one more goal in the quarter despite peppering the Centre net with shots.
Sammy Zickel made three huge saves to preserve a 10-9 lead for Centre going into the final quarter.
- BSC kept the pressure on the fourth, scoring two goals in the first two and a half minutes to retake the lead. The scored stayed at 11-10 for six minutes before the Colonels forced a turnover and capitalized as Brown found Malubay for the tying goal. Centre retained possession on the faceoff and after two shots from Caldwell missed the mark – including that rebounded off the post – the freshman got it to Hubbs, who put the Colonels back on top with his fifth goal of the game. The defenses held for the next four minutes before the Panthers tied the score with 43 seconds to go. Malubay and Hubbs each had chances at the last second winner, but they went wide of the net and the game went into overtime.
