DANVILLE, Ky. – Coming off of series-opening win on Saturday against Rhodes, the Centre softball team (8-27, 2-13 SAA) looked to snag at least one more on Sunday as they celebrated four senior Colonels on the Centre Softball Field. The Gold and White would do just that, erasing a five-run deficit to force extra innings to eventually win the first game 8-7. The Colonels couldn't muster the rally in the second game of the doubleheader, falling 6-3 in game two.
GAME ONE: Centre 8, Rhodes 7 (10 innings)
- The Lynx got off to a hot start in the first three innings of action, scoring five runs in that span compared to the Colonels' zero.
-
Kaylee Gregory came onto the mound in the end of the third inning, halting Rhodes' momentum for three-straight innings, the Martinsville, Ind., native giving eggs on the scoreboard to the Lynx during that stretch.
-
Kaylen Storms was the first to drive in a run for Centre in the fourth inning, their next two coming later by way of senior
Brylin Isaacs sending a double to left center.
- Down four runs in the seventh inning, senior
Riley McCue was able to drive in her senior teammate
Maddison Ellis on third by putting the ball in play. The Lynx lead was now down to three.
- The next batter,
Andrea Searcy, shot a pitch down the right side of the field, reaching second base and sending McCue past home plate to cut the deficit to two.
- After Gregory walked,
Sunnie Woske came to pinch hit and both advanced on a passed ball,
Hailey Watson's grounder drove the pinch runner to cut the lead to one.
- Storms would step to the plate next and send a shot to the Lynx third basemen, just enough to drive in Gregory for the tying run.
- With Isaacs being the ghost runner in the bottom of the 10th, senior
Alana Fullen's sacrifice bunt sent Isaacs into third base.
-
Sawyer Lecius stepped to that plate. First pitch, foul ball. Second pitch, Isaacs would take off immediately and Lecius would mark a high bunt, sending the ball at just enough of a downward angle to force the pitcher to make a long run on the play, Isaacs sliding into home plate for the game-winning score.
GAME TWO: Rhodes 6, Centre 3
- The Lynx were first to strike, a single driving in a run to push the lead to two.
- McCue would find a clean swing in the third inning, earning the second home run of her career at Centre. This two-run shot to center field was the first for her this season, driving in Ellis along with her to tie the contest.
- Rhodes would score in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings of action, putting their lead up to four runs.
- The Colonels would try to garner another final-inning rally, Searcy skipping a single along the left-field line to drive in Storms for their final run of the contest.
