DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre football team played its home opener on Saturday night as they faced the Maryville Scots under the lights at Danville High School. This night belonged to the Centre defense, who controlled the game as Centre improved to 2-0 with a hard-fought 20-10 victory.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After stopping Centre on fourth down on the opening series of the game, Maryville marched into the red zone before stalling as
Armon Wells made a big tackle for loss on third down and the Scots had to settle for a field goal.
- Later in the first quarter, the Colonels went on a long drive of their own as
Nick Osterman found
Ashton Foos on a quick hitter for a long gain, setting up a
Cam Tegge field goal to tie the score.
- A bubble screen from Osterman to
Cole Littleton made up the majority of the yardage on Centre's first drive of the second quarter. The Colonels reached the Maryville red zone when Osterman hit
Will McDaniel on a picture perfect pattern for the game's first touchdown and a 10-3 Centre lead.
- Both defenses clamped down after the Centre touchdown and controlled the rest of the second period. A promising Maryville drive got thwarted as
Jack Colosimo picked off a deep ball near the end of the quarter and Centre maintained their 10-3 lead into the halftime break.
- On Centre's first drive of the third quarter, the Colonels faced a fourth down in their own territory.
Sam Murray took the ball on a fake punt and raced deep into Maryville real estate. The trick play paid off as Centre capped off the drive with a ten-yard strike from Osterman to Foos and the Colonels grabbed a 17-3 lead.
- The Scots responded in kind with a long drive punctuated by a short touchdown run to cut the deficit in half at 17-10. The two teams traded punts for the rest of the third period and into the fourth period as both defenses returned to controlling the line of scrimmage.
- Midway through the fourth quarter, Centre embarked on a 13-play drive that took over seven minutes off the clock. Osterman made the biggest play with his feet as he converted a crucial third down with a 34-yard scramble. Tegge connected on a short field goal to put Centre back on top by three scores with less than three minutes remaining.
