Colonels pick up tenth conference win with sweep of Panthers

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team won its tenth conference game of the season and 16th game of the year on Sunday afternoon as the Colonels completed the season sweep of the Birmingham-Southern Panthers in straight sets.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The Colonels trailed 15-13 midway through the opening set before unleashing a 9-1 run to take command. A kill by Syd Bietz and consecutive aces by Emily Gardner put the finishing touches on a 25-18 victory for Centre.
- Centre used the serving of Madi Winfield to assume control of the second set, as she had a pair of aces in a 5-0 spurt that put the Colonels on top. From there, Centre never looked back as Bietz put home the clinching kill in another 25-18 win.
- The third set was the closest one of the day as the lead switched hands several times with neither team leading by more than three for the most part. With the score tied at 19-19, Centre reeled off five straight to force a match point, eventually winning by a score of 25-21.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Bietz and Brooke Palmer each led the way for Centre with a game high nine kills.
- The Colonels' 11 aces on the day were the most in a game for Centre since they recorded 12 in the season opener against Greensboro.
- Bietz established a new single season kills record by a first-year in today's win, breaking the mark of 279 set by SAA Newcomer of the Year Ally Knueven last season.
- Centre's tenth conference win is the most in a season since the Colonels won a dozen SAA games in the 2013 season.
- 2023 also represents the first time since 2013 that Centre has swept the season series with Birmingham-Southern.
