SAN ANTONIO – Centre football faced its toughest test of the year as the Colonels traveled to Texas for a clash with the Trinity Tigers, ranked no. 5 in the nation. Ultimately it was the Tigers who made more big plays in a 31-3 victory over the Colonels.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After pinning the Colonels deep with a sack, Trinity got a short field on their first drive and marched into the red zone, but the drive stalled following a
Joseph Becherer sack on third down, and then
Colton Wessel blocked the Tigers' field goal attempt – his second blocked kick of the year – to keep the game scoreless.
- The first score came near the end of the first quarter as Trinity took nearly five minutes to go 92 yards, finishing the drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to go up 7-0.
- To start the second quarter, the Tigers made the biggest play of the game as they returned a punt 66 yards for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead.
- Trailing 21-0, Centre finally got moving near the end of the half.
Jack Gohmann connected with high school teammate
Blake Busson for 15 yards to move the sticks. Then on fourth down, the Colonels ran a fake punt to perfection as up-back
Lex Breeden ran 25 yards into Trinity territory. A completion from Gohmann to
Ashton Foos got Centre into the red zone and
Cam Tegge booted a 36-yard field goal to put the Colonels on the board.
- Trinity got the ball to start the second half and took over five minutes to go 90 yards for the game's final touchdown.
- Gohmann and the Centre offense put together another solid drive at the end of the third as the sophomore quarterback made two clutch completions to
Scotty Brown to get the ball on the Trinity 5, but his attempt on fourth down was broken up and the Colonels turned it over on downs.
- The Centre offense made their longest drive of the game in the fourth quarter as they started a drive on their own 5. Centre got first downs on completions to Brown and
Christian Billiter, a run by
Gabe Walker and two Trinity penalties, but the drive stalled at the Trinity 5 once more as the Tigers stuffed the run on 4th & 1.
