Field hockey remains unblemished in SAA play after downing Sabres

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre field hockey closed their fall break home series on Sunday afternoon. Hosting Southern Athletic Association's (SAA) Marian, the Colonels outscored the Sabres 3-1. Downing their conference opponent, the Gold & White improve to 5-0 in the league and 7-5 overall.  

 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS  

-The Colonels got off to a hasty start, placing the game's first goal less than two minutes in. Claire Martin got in the scoring column with an effortless, unassisted goal that handed Centre an early 1-0 lead. The Sabres eventually evened the score late in the half, recording their only goal during a penalty corner. Entering halftime, the score showed a tie at even ones.  

- The Colonels quickly opened the second half with a goal to double the scoring deficit. Just minutes into the half, Martin claimed her second goal of the game, this time finding help from Meghan Speth.  

- Already leading the Sabres 2-1, the Gold & White tallied their third goal seconds into the fourth quarter. Peyton Gahm owned the Colonel's final goal, finding help from Martin who claimed the assist. At the end of regulation, the final score showed Centre three, Marian one.  

 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE  
- Claire Martin was the game's leading scorer with two goals. Adding her assist to the final goal, Martin had a part in all three of the Colonel's goals. Gahm registered one goal, moving her weekend total to two.  

- In goal, Carlie McKenry denied seven of the Sabre's eight shots on goal.  

- The Colonels favored in corner opportunities, having 13 while the Sabres had five. 

- Abby Brainard and Halle Rigden shared a tie for the game's leader in defensive saves, each claiming one apiece.
