DECATUR, Ga.- On Friday evening, the Centre women's basketball team opened their 2023-24 campaign in the Agnes Scott Classic. After playing a close first half, the Colonels put up 32 points to their opponent's 15, clinching their first win of the season.
Downing Greensboro by a score of 56-39, the Gold & White improve to a 1-0 overall record.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Pride opened the game's scoring, taking an early 8-3 lead in the initial possessions of play. By the end of the first quarter, a three from Bailey Rucker followed by a lay-up from Natalie Duggins put the Colonels within four entering quarter two.
- Opening the next period, Makya Grinter quickly handed Centre their first lead of the game with a forced turnover turned lay-up. Just after, Emma Perna further stretched Centre's hold with her first career three with the Colonels. Both teams played a tight first half causing the score to remain tied at 24-24 entering halftime.
- Out of the break, Greensboro opened the second half with a 4-0 run. The Gold & White would answer with a nice push, but the Pride would answer with a flurry of free-throws to take as much as a seven-point lead. Nearing the close of the quarter, the momentum began to swing in the Colonels direction as they put up eight unanswered points to close the quarter.
- Centre carried the momentum into the fourth period both offensively and defensively. Outscoring the Pride 19-3, the Colonels nearly doubled their opponents score in the second half alone. At regulation's end, the score showed 56-39, Centre favoring.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rucker led all players with 17 points, adding four rebounds. Rookie Lilly Reid followed closely behind her with 13 points.
- Natalie Duggins fronted the Colonels in rebounds, collecting a total of nine.
- Centre forced 16 turnovers while the Pride caused seven. Grinter led the game in turnovers with four while Anna Thomas followed with three.
- The Colonels shot 36 percent (5-14) from the free throw line compared to the Pride's 50 percent (8-16).
- Four Colonels collected their first career points in tonight's contest including Reid, Perna, Arin Nipp, and Lindsay Jessie.
