Colonels sweep Petrels to advance to SAA semifinals

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Centre volleyball team made quick work of the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in the quarterfinals of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament, winning in straight sets to advance to Saturday's semifinal round.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
 
- The Colonels and Petrels played a close opening set, with Centre holding a small lead throughout. With Centre on top 16-14, the Colonels took advantage of some Oglethorpe miscues and reeled off seven points in a row and cruised to a 25-15 win.
- Centre was on fire in the second set as the Colonels blew it open with an 8-1 run midway through the frame, with Syd Bietz recording during four kills during the stretch. Leading 17-12, Centre scored eight of the final nine points to get the 25-13 win, capped off by two kills from Isabel Thornton and an ace by Emily Goddin.
- The third set was more of the same as the Colonels used a 9-1 run to turn a close 12-10 game into a comfortable 21-11 lead. Centre scored the last three points of the set to complete the sweep with a 25-14 win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
 
- The Colonels enjoyed one of their biggest hitting percentage differentials of the season, hitting .351 compared to .000 for the Petrels.
- The second set saw the Colonels finish with 17 kills as a team against just one error for a season high hitting percentage of .516.
- Bietz finished with a game high 11 kills, followed by Goddin with ten.
- Emily Gardner recorded 29 assists as the Colonels enjoyed a 37-22 edge in that statistical category.
- Madi Barron had a game high 12 digs, followed by Madi Winfield with nine.

No. 2 seed Centre will move on to the semifinal round on Saturday, as the Colonels will face the winner of the no. 3 Sewanee vs. no. 6 Millsaps matchup at 4 PM.
