LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Centre men's basketball team wrapped up tournament play with the second of two games at the LaGrange Classic against the Huntingdon Hawks. The Colonels built a big second half lead and then withstood a late charge from the Hawks to get their first win of the season by a score of 87-81.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- After falling behind early, Centre used a 13-1 run to take its first lead of the game as
Noah Ring came off the bench and hit two three-pointers in the stretch to ignite the Colonels.
- During a six-minute stretch in the first half, the Colonels outscored Huntingdon 17-3 to take their largest lead at 32-15 of the period on free throws by
Riley Mastin, who crashed the offensive glass and scored eight points in the run.
- The Hawks battled to get the deficit back into single digits in the final minute of the half, but then
Landen Hamilton found
Cade Stinnett for a tough finish in traffic to give Centre a 42-31 lead at the break.
- To start the second half, both teams traded baskets as Centre's lead stayed between 9-13 points. A three-pointer by Ring and a driving layup by Hamilton put Centre back on top by 17, and then another bucket in the paint from
Chez Moore produced Centre's largest lead at 61-43.
- Down the stretch, the Hawks turned up the heat defensively to cut into Centre's lead, making it a 79-74 game with just over a minute to go, but the Colonels iced the game at the free throw line and Huntingdon could get no closer than four points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Stinnett led a balanced Centre scoring effort with 22 points. Moore added a season high 20 points to go along with six rebounds.
- Mastin led all players with a season high ten rebounds to go along with a season high 15 points for his first career double-double.
- Centre held advantages of 40-32 on points in the paint, 22-10 in points off turnovers and 24-14 on second chance points.
