LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Centre men's basketball team opened up the Wayne Proffitt Classic with a tilt against host University of Lynchburg on Tuesday night. The Hornets' red-hot shooting from beyond the arc proved to be the game-changer in the 82-60 loss for the Colonels.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The squads traded three-point baskets to open up the scoring, with Centre's score coming from
Izayiah Villafuerte. The freshman did not miss a basket in the first half. He went 4-4 from the field in the opening frame.
- Lynchburg took the lead at 18:12 in the first and held it the rest of the half. The Colonels cut it to two at 16-14 after a
Chez Moore layup and a
Landen Hamilton three. The Hornets led by as many as 17 in the first frame thanks in part to shooting 55.6 percent from deep. They took a 46-29 lead into the locker room.

Caleb Maul got the scoring started early in the second half with a layup and an and one free throw just 12 seconds into the frame. Following that, Moore made shots from the charity stripe. The 5-0 run cut the Lynchburg lead to 12.

Hunter Coleman caught fire from deep and buried three three-pointers, in around two and a half minutes of game time, in an attempt to continue to chip away at the lead held by the Hornets. Centre eventually cut a 20-point deficit to 14, but Lynchburg held on and won the game on their home floor to open the holiday classic.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels shot 41.5 percent from the floor and a season second-best 34.8 percent from three. The Hornets were hot from behind the arc all game as they shot at a 56.7 percent clip for the game.
- Villafuerte led Centre in scoring with 10 points, while
Hunter Coleman contributed nine.
Carter Baughman, Moore,
Jaxson Banks, and
Noah Ring each contributed six points.
- The Colonels scored 15 points off 10 Lynchburg turnovers, which was five points better than the opposition's points off turnovers total.
- Centre tallied four blocks for the fourth game this season. Moore, Maul, Coleman, and Banks each swatted one shot.
