ST. LOUIS- Women's basketball returned to action on Friday, traveling north to face Webster University. After a back-and-forth contest, the Gorloks' fourth quarter shooting downed the Colonels 86-74.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels trailed early as Webster opened with a 6-0 run. Strong offensive rebounds held Centre in the game as they struggled to place shots initially. Down by two possessions for much of the quarter, a pair of unbroken threes from Anna Thomas granted Centre their first lead entering period two.
- The second quarter showed a sturdy offensive showing for both teams, each shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. The Colonels maintained their hold, answering every Webster basket with at least one of their own. Closing the first half, Makya Grinter further stretched the deficit to five with a jumper and a pair of made free throws.
- Out of halftime, the Gorloks opened with their first scoring run since period one, quickly reducing Centre's hold to one-point. Minutes later, Grinter kick started a 7-point streak for the Colonels, with following baskets from Emma Rose Vincent and Lilly Reid. Webster answered with a three and with both teams sitting in foul trouble, the third quarter closed at the free-throw line. Entering the final period, the score halted at 58-56, Centre favoring.
- The Gorloks saved their best performance for the fourth quarter, stealing the lead after opening with a 13-2 scoring run. The Colonels began to slow Webster's momentum, but every Centre basket would be met with two from their opponents. Nearly doubling the Gold & White in points in the fourth period, Webster closed the final score at 86-74.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Vincent led Centre in points with 14, adding five rebounds, one assist, and a block. Grinter followed just after with 12 points, simultaneously leading the game in assists with five.
- The Gold & White shot 64 percent from the line, going 14-22.
- Webster just edged the Colonels out in rebounds, taking 37 to Centre's 33.
-The game found four lead changes and six ties throughout its 60 minutes.
