HANOVER, Ohio. – On Saturday, the Centre men's lacrosse opened their 2023 season with a quick trip to Hanover. With 12 difference scorers, the Colonels trounced the Panthers by a score of 21-4.
HIGHLIGHTS
- It wouldn't take long for the Colonels to get started, finding a quick goal in
Max Speers a minute into the game. Midway through the quarter, rookie
Ryan Black tallied his first collegiate goal off a pass from
Duncan MacDonald. The pair found another goal two minutes later that stretched Centre's lead to five. By first quarter's end, the Colonels offensive had five separate scorers, one of which was
David Caldwell, who already possessed a hat-trick.
- Opening the second quarter,
Christian Underhill tallied his second goal of the game during a man-up opportunity. Moments later, the Colonels, still in a man advantage, found another quick goal in
Ridr Knowlton with the assist from
Will Hubbs.
- Centre's defense was relentless in the second period. Holding Hanover scoreless, the Colonels forced 11 turnovers and kept the Panthers to a miniscule 18 percent on clears. Riding their defensive shut-out, Centre entered a double-digit lead as
Davis Wilmes nabbed a late goal from a failed Hanover clear.
- Coming out of the halftime,
Ben Zickel was the first to get on the board. Placing his first of two goals, the sophomore extended Centre's hold to 11. The Colonels would put up three additional points before the Panthers would end their nearly 19-minute score drought.
- In the final quarter, two Colonels collected their first collegiate goals.
Nick Witcher claimed his off an unassisted goal midway through the quarter while
Bryant Brown found his in the final goal of the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre's offense had 12 different scorers on the board. Caldwell led the way for the Colonels with four goals while six athletes followed with two apiece.
- Centre assisted over half of their 21 goals. Collecting 12 total assists,
Nate Malubay, MacDonald, Hubbs, Black, and Underhill led with two helpers each.
- The Colonels dominated on the face-off. Seeing four different athletes at the position, Centre won 24 of 29,
Dylan Croft winning 12 alone.
- Collecting three in his collegiate debut, first year
Hayden Burns tallied the most saves for Centre.
Sammy Zickel and
Avi Leffler were just behind him with two each.
- Centre held the advantage in ground balls, collecting 30 to the opposing's 19.
-The Colonels had a perfect 100 percent in clears while keeping Hannover to 45 percent.
