Hubbs highlights Colonel's victory with 100th career goal

DANVILLE, Ky. –  On Wednesday evening, Centre men's lacrosse hosted crosstown rival, Transylvania University, in their 2023 home-opener. After an overpowering first-half, the Colonels defeated the Pioneers by a score of 14-6, improving to 2-0 on the season.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Pioneers got on the board first but less than a minute later, the Colonels found a goal in senior Will Hubbs. Centre's offense ignited, netting four goals in just four minutes, forcing Transylvania to refocus with a timeout. Centre wouldn't stutter, placing four additional goals, the Colonels extended their score run to 8-0 by the end of the first quarter. 
- Opening the second quarter, the Colonels tallied another goal that extended their lead to eight. Sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Zickel kept Transylvania's offense silent for nearly 25 minutes, eight times denying the Pioneer's efforts. Transylvania wouldn't land a second goal until the last two minutes of the half. Captain Hubbs entered the century mark in career goals as he landed the first half's final goal. Collecting his fifth goal of the game, the senior set the first half score at Centre 11, Transylvania 2. 
- Coming out of halftime, Transylvania netted the first two goals of the quarter less than a minute apart. Centre responded with two consecutive goals of their own midway throught the quarter. The Pioneers ended the period by adding one additional goal to put the score at Centre 13, Transylvania 5 entering the final period of play. 
- The Colonels found themselves in a man-down situation four minutes into the fourth quarter. Capitalizing, the Pioneers landed a quick goal to shrink Centre's lead to six. With seven minutes left in the game, Ridr Knowlton set up Duncan MacDonald for the contest's final goal, solidifying the game's score at 14-6 in Centre's favor. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hubbs led the game in scoring, collecting 8 points as he tallied six goals and two assists. David Caldwell and MacDonald followed with two apiece. 
- Both teams matched one another with 42 shots taken but Centre bettered the Pioneers by putting 28 on frame. 
- Zickel bettered his previous career record of 14 saves with 18. 
- Centre nabbed 49 groundballs compared to the opposing's 30. 
- Dylan Croft dominated at the face-off, winning 14 of his 18 attempts. Adding Alex Mozingo's, 5 for 6 at the face-off, the Colonels won all but five.
