DANVILLE, Ky. – After facing off against Asbury and Wooster in two separate games on Saturday, the Centre softball team (1-3) faced off against the two teams again to cap off the weekend on Sunday. The Gold & White would fall to the Fighting Scots in the first game, but won the late-game thriller in their second contest against Asbury, 5-4.
GAME ONE: Wooster 9, Centre 1
- Wooster was able to get a runner in scoring position in the first inning with two outs but starting pitcher
Layne Ogle would catch the fifth batter in the lineup looking on a strikeout to keep the runners from scoring.
- The Fighting Scots would strike back in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs on the Colonels by the end of it.
- Freshman
Izzy Rushing was able to put one on the board for Centre in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Louisville, Ky., native sending a hit to center field for her first collegiate home run.
GAME TWO: Centre 5, Asbury 4
- The Gold & White were able to generate some offense in the game's first inning,
Tori Candler slicing a single up the middle of the field for an RBI single to bring
Abby Duncan home and take the lead.
- After starting pitcher
Lucy Baseheart and co. were able to three-up-three-down the Eagles in the top of the third, the bottom of the inning showcased RBI's from
Emily Lammers and
Andrea Searcy on back-to-back at-bats to extend the lead to three.
- Asbury would run hot, in the fourth inning, putting together four runs to reclaim the lead.
- After a new opposing pitcher hit the mound for the Eagles,
Kaylen Storms was able to draw a quick walk and round the bases to home after Rushing sent a double to center field, tying the game.
- The teams would go back-and-forth, Asbury putting runners in scoring position with only one out in the bottom of the seventh. The Colonels would hold their opponent through the rest of the inning thanks to a quick reaction on a line-drive hit to Rushing and a well-fielder ground ball
Rylie Bentley.
- The final half-inning would be all Centre, Candler leading it off with a double inside the right-centerfield gap. Lammers would put the ball back in right for a single to put Candler on third base, with Searcy in the next at-bat pushing the ball to right center (again) to bring home Candler for the walk-off win.
