DANVILLE, Ky. – On Saturday, Centre women's lacrosse hosted the Piedmont Lions in their second game of the season. After a four-quarter rally, the Colonels bettered the Lions, improving to a 2-0 record on the year.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre quickly took a 2-0 lead, finding a quick goal in
Haley Rice followed by one in
Gracie Garner less than a minute later. Piedmont would answer, cutting the score deficit to one. The Colonels rattled off two more goals before Piedmont's offense ignited, going on a 3-0 score run to tie the game. By quarter's end, both teams landed an additional shot, putting the score at even fives entering the second quarter.
- Opening the period, Piedmont's offense erupted, outscoring the Colonels 5-0 in the first five minutes. Centre eventually broke the Lion's run with three uninterrupted goals from Garner,
Lily Gahm, and
Ella Treinen.
- In the third quarter, both teams traded a 2-0 score run before
Haley Rice broke the pattern, scoring off a crease roll to bring the Colonels within one going into fourth period.
- Gahm launched the Colonel's comeback in the opening minutes of the final quarter. Her back-to-back goals, paired with one from
Addie Lewis put the Colonels ahead for the first time since the opening quarter. Piedmont would intensify their man-to-man pressure, but the Colonels wouldn't stutter. For the remainder of the game, Centre would answer every Piedmont goal with three of their own. Outscoring the Lions 9-3 in period four, the final score was capped at Centre 20, Piedmont 16.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Centre possessed three players with hat-tricks. Gahm was the game's leading scorer. She collected 10 points after netting six and helping 4. Treinen and Garner followed with four goals apiece.
- The Colonels enjoyed a 23-12 advantaged in groundballs. They also edged out the Lions in clears, going 17-21, compared to the opposing's 12-17.
- Centre outshot Piedmont 40 to 29. Of their 40 shots, 37 were on frame.
- In goal, Gracie Falk collected seven saves.
