Danville, Ky. – On Wednesday evening, the Centre women's lacrosse team hosted Carthage College for a mid-week match-up. After a second quarter scoring stall, the Colonels fell to the Firebirds by a score of 13-11, moving to 3-4 on the season.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Firebirds opened the game's scoring but just seconds later,
Haley Rice evened the score with a fast break up the middle.
Lily Gahm and
Erin Reynolds followed with a pair of goals, handing the Colonels an early 3-1 lead. Carthage would later respond with two successive goals, tying the game entering the next quarter.
- Carthage quickly found momentum opening the second period. The Firebirds rattled off eight continuous goals that the Colonels would struggle to recover from. After holding Centre scoreless, Carthage possessed an 11- 3 lead entering halftime.
- Out of the break,
Gracie Garner broke the Colonel's scoring drought with the help from
Ella Treinen. The Firebirds scored next, but Centre would counter in the very next possession.
Lily Gahm's free-position goal prompted a 5-0 score-run that would put the Colonels within three entering the game's final period.
- The fourth quarter proved to be a defensive battle as both teams remained scoreless for nearly 12 minutes. In the final possessions, Centre outscored the Firebirds 2-1 but it wouldn't be enough for a comeback. By end of regulation the score was set at 13-11, Carthage favoring.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rice and Treinen led the Colonels in goals, both possessing a hat-trick. Treinen added an assist, putting her in a five-way tie with
Emma Botts, Garner, Reynolds, and Gahm for the most assists.
- The two teams matched one another in shots taken, each attempting 31.
- The Colonels dominated in 50-50 balls, taking 25 compared to Carthage's 10.
- On the circle, the Firebirds took 15 possessions while Centre grabbed 10.

The Colonels will host a slew of games for their 2023 spring break. They will open with SAA's Hendrix College on Saturday Mar. 18, before turning around to host Wittenberg on Sunday, Mar. 19. Later in the week, they'll face Whitman on Mar. 22, just before closing with SAA's Oglethorpe on Mar. 25.
