DANVILLE, Ky. – On Saturday afternoon, Centre women's lacrosse hosted Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opponent, Oglethorpe. After a thrilling contest, the Colonels completed the comeback, downing the Stormy Petrels by a score of 15-13.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The first quarter proved to be an offensive affair as both teams answered one another's goals.
Ella Treinen responded to Oglethorpe's opening goal with a drive up the middle off her own draw control possession.
Haley Rice scored the second Colonel goal with the help from
Erin Reynolds.
- Centre blazed into the second quarter, taking a two-possession lead with a duo of goals. Treinen netted the first of an iso play in the eight, Reynolds followed with a made free position shot. The Petrels scratched a goal just before Treinen notched a hat-trick with the assist from
Lily Gahm. Oglethorpe closed the first half with a 2-0 run that would tie the game at even 5's.
- Opening the second half, the Stormy Petrels caught momentum, outscoring the Colonels 4-1 in the first five minutes.
Grace Aug collected Centre's first point with a top-shelf goal after Rice found her wide open in the eight. Later, Rice joined in having a hat-trick, netting three goals alone in the third quarter. A late goal from the visitors set the score at 11-9 entering the final period.
- Oglethorpe opened the fourth quarter's scoring just 20 seconds in, extending their hold to three. A series of sharp passes through the midfield ended with a crease side goal from
Emma Botts. Gahm scores just after, putting the Colonels within one possession. A free-position from Oglethorpe once again returns their hold to two but just after, a score from Rice followed by a man-up goal from Treinen, tied the game at 13-13. The Stormy Petrels would record another point nearing the end of the quarter but two successive goals from Treinen and Rice sealed the deal. In the final two minutes of play, Oglethorpe attempted to make a comeback but a draw control from
Addie Lewis handed the Colonels the necessary possession. The Stormy Petrels took two simultaneous cards, putting them two players down for the final minutes of the game. Proving detrimental for Oglethorpe, Centre was able to maintain their lead, solidifying a 15-13 victory for the Colonels.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Treinen and Rice tied for the game's leading scorers, each planting five. Six additional players joined the scoring column for Centre.
- Rice and Gahm tied for the lead in assists, helping three each.
- Gahm dominated in both ground balls and draw controls, having 10 possessions and six scoops.
- In the crease,
Gracey Falk collected 10 saves on the day. She led the Colonels to 18 of 20 successful clears.
