Centre falls to Elmhurst in game's final minutes

ELMHURST, Ill. – On Sunday, Centre men's lacrosse traveled to Illinois for their first away contest of the season. After a back-and-forth challenge, the Colonels fell short in the game's final quarter, the final score showing 15-14.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
- In the initial five minutes of play, the Colonels held the advantage in offensive possession. Nearing the six-minute mark, Max Speers found Duncan MacDonald posted up on the crease to open the game's scoring. Elmhurst would tie the game just before Speers connected with David Caldwell to put Centre back in the lead. In the next possession, Ryan Black stretched the advantage to two with an unassisted goal. The Bluejays notched their second goal with a minute remaining to put the score at Centre 3, Elmhurst 2. 
- Opening the second quarter, Elmhurst managed the first goal, tying the game. The game suffered a four-minute scoring freeze until Christian Underhill setup Black for an easy goal. Underhill followed with his own goal that put Centre two possessions ahead. Before the end of the first half, the Bluejays would collect two more goals, Centre would add one additional. At the end of the first half, the score sat at Centre six, Elmhurst five. 
- Coming out of halftime, the Bluejays quickly reversed the score deficit with two unanswered goals. For much of the quarter, the two teams would trade goals. Speers and Black eventually ended the pattern with two consecutive goals, bringing the score to 10-9 entering the final qaurter. 
- Elmhurst took their largest lead of the game after opening the fourth quarter with a 3-0 score run. Caldwell broke the Bluejay's momentum with a missile from up top. Just after, Mick Ginnity's diving goal tied the game at even 12s, forcing Elmhurst to burn a time-out. The Bluejays came out of the break with a 3-0 run that the Colonels wouldn't recover from. In the final minute, Centre placed two additional shots but with the clock running out, the final score would read Elmhurst 15, Centre 14.  
 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Caldwell fronted the Colonels in goals with four, adding an assist. Will Hubbs matched him in points after collecting three helpers and two goals. Black and Speers both placed two goals apiece.
- At the face off, Dylan Croft and Alex Mozingo split time. Combined, the two went 20-33.
- Croft led the Colonels in groundballs with six. Holden Techet followed with five and Mozingo was just behind him with four. 
- In goal Sammy Zickel collected 14 saves, nine of which were in a dominant second quarter performance.
-Centre favored in clears, completing 18-20, Elmhurst managing 16-20.

Centre men's lacrosse will return home in preparation for their next contest. On Sunday, Mar. 12, the Colonels with face-off against Carthage at 12 p.m. ET.
