HANOVER, Ind. – Riding a six-game win streak, the Centre softball team (9-7, 6-0 SAA) continued the strong start to the season with a Wednesday double-header against the Hanover Panthers. The Colonels were able to snag the first game before Hanover's offense overpowered them in game two, the first win becoming their best first 16-game start to the season since 2017.
GAME 1: Centre 5, Hanover 3
-
Emily Lammers opened up the game with the first RBI of the day, sending a pitch to the right side of the diamond to drive home fellow-freshman
Izzy Rushing. The Gold & White would later capitalize on a Hanover error to get a two-run lead before the inning concluded.
- The game would stay quiet until Centre would pop back up in the fourth inning,
Layne Ogle and
Sunnie Woske each earning RBI singles to extend the Colonel lead to four.
- Starting pitcher
Lucy Baseheart would conclude a strong day in after the fourth inning, only allowing three hits in her appearance with striking out four different Panthers along the way.
- Centre would have one final crack of the bats in game one during the fifth inning,
Hailey Watson slapping a double into the right-center gap to bring
Andrea Searcy home and put Lammers on third base.
- Hanover would look to amount a comeback with three runs in the sixth, but
Kaylee Gregory would climb the mound in the seventh inning for a quick three-up, three-down set for her first save of the season.
GAME 2: Hanover 11, Centre 8
- Recording at least one run in their eighth-straight contest, Lammers singling once again to kick off the game that would eventually lead to Rushing crossing home plate.
-
Taylor Webb would add on to the quick lead, hitting a toss right back to the pitcher that would put a bases-loaded situation into each runner advancing one base, including Lammers reaching home.
- Hanover would erupt their offense compared to the first game, totaling 11 runs after three innings of work in a nine-run lead.
- Centre looked to amass a comeback in the fourth inning after
Layne Ogle led off with a single past first base, Candler later singling through the left side to drive in both Ogle and Rushing to cut the Panthers' lead down to seven with no outs.
- Baseheart was able to put together Centre's fifth run, bringing home
Abby Duncan from third base to cut the lead to six.
- Senior
Sawyer Lecius would pinch hit for Centre and the substitution would pay off, Lecius cutting Hanover's lead to just four on a two-out single that brought in Lammers and Candler.
- Baseheart would swing the bat again in the fifth to cut the deficit to three, pushing a two-out single to right field that drove home Lammers (her third of the day), but the Panthers would end the run in the next at bat.
