DANVILLE, Ky- On Saturday afternoon, the Centre women's lacrosse team honored their class of 2023 in a Senior Day match-up between Southern Athletic Association's (SAA) Birmingham-Southern (BSC). After a second half scoring overload, the Colonels defeated the Panthers 20-12, moving to 3-2 in the league.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- For the opening five minutes of play, both teams traded goals, BSC landing the first.
Ella Treinen opened the scoring for Centre with the help from senior
Grace Aug.
Haley Rice netted the next goal off a free position, tying the game, simultaneously opening a 3-0 score run that would hand the Colonels their first lead of the game.
- The Panthers initiated the second quarter's scoring less than a minute in, and once again, Treinen responded. After a nearly four-minute scoring freeze, BSC notched two consecutive goals that would tie the game at even 5's. Closing the first half,
Addie Lewis, Rice, and Treinen put together three sequential goals, returning the lead to the Colonels. Entering halftime, the score read 8-6, Centre favoring.
- The Colonels came out of the break on fire. BSC would land the first goal, but Centre responded with three consecutive goals from
Emma Botts, Rice, and Treinen. The Panthers collected an additional point but just after the Colonels opened another scoring run (4-0).
Addie Lewis grabbed the first followed by
Gracie Garner, Lewis again, and finally Rice. BSC closed the third period with two late goals moving the score to 15-10, Centre leading.
- Rice opened the final quarter with a monumental milestone, her 100th career goal. The Panthers began to inch their way back into the game after placing two consecutive points. The Colonels stifled any hopes of a Panthers' comeback with a tear of four consecutive goals to close the score at Centre 20, BSC 12.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rice led the game in both goals and points. After matching her career high on seven goals in a single game, the sophomore reached the notable milestone of 100 Career Goals. She had part in nearly 50% of Centre's goals.
-Treinen and Lewis were the other two Colonels owning hat-tricks, Treinen having five, Lewis tallying three. Botts, Aug, and Garner each collected goals by regulation's end.
- On the defensive front, four Colonels sat in a tie for the game's leader in 50-50 balls.
Lauren Jung,
Bri Hendricks,
Skylan Thompson, and attacker Aug each scooped four balls each. Hendricks and Thompson also tied for the overall leaders in caused turnovers with four.
- Centre more than doubled the Panthers in ground balls, stealing 26 to the opposing's 10.
- The Colonels dominated on the circle, taking 21 possessions to the Panthers' 15.
- In free-position shooting, Centre completed 14 opportunities, the visitors finishing six.
