DANVILLE, Ky- On Tuesday evening, Centre field hockey hosted their cross-town rivals, the Pioneers. After an intense four-quarter battle, both teams entered a singular overtime period as the score showed a tie at even ones. With just under two minutes remaining in overtime,
Meghan Speth recorded the game-winning-goal, moving the score to 2-1 thus claiming the Colonels' first victory of their 2023 campaign.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Gold & White opened play with a strong offensive showing, Transylvania only managing one shot in the entire first-half. Although the Gold & White attempted 14 shots, the Pioneers were able to defuse Centre's offense, halting the score at 0-0 entering halftime.
- Out of the break, the Colonels' offense continued their intensity into much of the third period. Nearing the half-way mark, the Pioneers put together the game's first goal, taking the first 1-0 lead of the game. In the very next minute, the Colonels found a penalty corner turned stroke opportunity. Placed on the dot, veteran
Meghan Speth seemed to effortlessly even the score with a solid shot to the back of the cage. Entering the final quarter, the game remained tied at even ones.
- The fourth quarter mirrored the first half with both teams remaining scoreless, forcing the game into overtime. Nearing the end of the first overtime period, the Colonels were awarded a multitude of corners. With just a little over two minutes left in sudden death, the Gold & White connected with Speth in front of the Pioneer's cage. Setting in the game-winning-goal, the senior closed the final score at Centre two, Transy one.

- The Colonels dominated offensively, taking 28 shots to the Pioneer's four. Speth was the game's leader in both goals (2) and shots taken (9).
- Centre nearly sextupled Transy in corner chances with 19. The Pioneers had three opportunities.
- In goal,
Carlie McKenry denied three of the four Pioneer shots taken.
UP NEXT
The Colonels will next enter into a four-game road series. They'll head north to face Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opponent, Concordia, on Sept. 16 then turning around to face Marian on Sept. 18. Before returning home, the team will travel to Virginia in order to face both Washington & Lee (Sept. 23) and Lynchburg (Sept. 24).
