Centre claims second overtime victory of the week

FOND DU LAC, WiOn Sunday afternoon, Centre field hockey entered game two of their conference opening weekend. Going up against Southern Athletic Association's (SAA) Marian, a late goal from Claire Martin solidified the Colonels second overtime victory of the week. After today's victory, Centre field hockey moves to 3-3 overall, 2-0 in SAA play. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The game's opening quarter proved to be an even back-and-forth battle between the two teams, the score remaining tied at 0-0. 
- Heading into the second quarter, Centre began to control much of the possession, Marian not attempting a shot until 12 minutes into the period. Nearing halftime, the Colonels claimed the first goal of the game when Claire Martin beamed a ball towards cage, connecting with Peyton Gahm off post during a penalty corner. Entering the break, the Colonels held a one-point advantage over the Sabres. 
- Regrouping during the break, Marian swiftly opened the second half with a penalty corner goal to re-tie the game at 1-1. Neither team would manage an additional goal for the remainder of regulation, sending the game into a sudden-death overtime period.
- The Sabre's controlled the ball in the opening minutes of the overtime period. On Centre's first possession, Gahm set Martin up for a one-on-one break-away up field. Moving the goalie, Martin set in the game-winning-goal to maintain Centre's undefeated conference record. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Martin and Gahm teamed up for both of Centre's goals, each having one goal and one assist. Martin led in shots taken with five; Maggie Will was just behind her with four taken. 
- The Colonels more than tripled the Sabres in shots taken. The Gold & White attempted 28 while Marian got six off. 
- In goal, Carlie McKenry stopped one of the two Marian shots-on-goal. 
 
UP NEXT
Centre will continue with their road series, next heading to Virginia for a pair of non-conference games. They'll first face Washington & Lee on Sept. 23 before traveling to the No. 24th ranked Lynchburg on Sept. 24.
