Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Lara Russell, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Men's soccer outlasts Berea

DANVILLE, Ky. – On Tuesday evening Centre men's soccer hosted in-state rivals, Berea College. Taking an early lead, the Colonels halted the Mountaineers at just one goal, simultaneously netting two themselves. Defeating Berea by a score of 2-1, the Gold & White moves to 3-4 on the season.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Colonels swiftly open the game's scoring, placing the first of two goals just eight minutes in. Crossing from the left, John Palomino connected with Sota Ippongi in front of the Mountaineer's goal, giving Centre an early 1-0 advantage.
- Berea, down early, quickly fired back with a quad of shots, but Centre's defense quickly defused all of the Mountaineers' shot attempts. Nearing the halftime break, Berea capitalized on a free-kick on the Centre's defensive end, tying the game at even ones entering the second half.
- Coming out of the break, both teams entered a 15-minute offensive stalemate, neither squad managing more than a shot each. Breaking the stand-off, junior defensemen Taylor Nelson repurposed a deflected shot from teammate Drew Davidson, sending the deciding goal to the bottom left of the Mountaineer's net. Now leading 2-1, the Gold & White kept Berea at bay for the remaining time, solidifying the Colonel's third victory of their 2023 campaign.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Nelson's game-winning goal was the first of his collegiate career and third overall goal with the Colonels. Ippongi netted his second of the season, making him Centre's second highest leading scorer.
- The Colonels tallied four corner kicks, bettering their opponents who had zero.
- In goal, Brendan Egan stuffed five of the Mountaineer's six shots on frame.
