DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre football returned home after picking up its first win of the season and hosted Berry on Family Weekend. The Vikings got the win by a score of 49-16.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Centre dug an early hole on their first possession after a short kick return, and made their situation worse when a bad snap led to a short punt that put the Vikings just outside the red zone. Berry capitalized two plays later for a quick 7-0 lead.
- On Centre's second drive, the Colonels marched into Berry territory as
Jack Gohmann ran for a first down and found
Blake Busson and
Christian Billiter for two more, but a low shotgun snap caused a big loss and killed the momentum.
- Berry drove 89 yards on their next series, with the biggest play a 22-yard end-around before hauling in a 23-yard score to make it 13-0 before
Colton Wessel blocked the extra point.
- The Vikings made it 20-0 near the end of the first quarter as Brandon Cade ran it in from 56 yards out to Berry up by three scores.
- Just before the end of the quarter, the Colonels got a drive going behind the running of
Gabe Walker. A deep ball from Gohmann to Busson got the ball on the Berry 2, and on the first play of the second quarter, Gohmann snuck it in to put Centre on the board.
- Berry was quick to strike back as the Vikings connected on a 40-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to make it 28-7.
- Centre responded right back as Busson made a clutch catch on third down, and then freshman
Tate Johnson made a diving effort on his first career catch to put the ball in the red zone. On 2nd & 3, Gohmann found Billiter in the end zone to cut the lead to 28-14.
- On the final drive of the half, Berry put it in the end zone, scoring a touchdown with 21 seconds left to swing the momentum their way for the rest of the game.
- Berry took the kickoff to start the third quarter and ran seven times for 55 yards, capping it off with a goal line plunge to make it 42-14, putting the game effectively out of reach.
- Centre's final points came in the fourth quarter as the ball was snapped by the Berry punter, who booted it out the back of his own end zone for a safety.
