Centre volleyball knocks off Oglethorpe to open conference play

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team opened conference play on Family Weekend as they welcomed the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels to Alumni Gym. After dropping the opening set, the Colonels rebounded to win the next three to improve to 7-5 on the year.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- In the opening set, the Petrels and Colonels played it close for the first half. The score was tied at 16-16 before Oglethorpe used a 4-0 run to take the lead for good, eventually pulling away for a 25-19 win.
- The second set unfolded in a similar fashion at first, with neither team holding much of an advantage through the first 15 points. Once again tied at 16-16, the Colonels went on a late charge, pulling away with nine out of the final 12 points as Abby Swartz put home the clinching kill on a 25-19 Centre win.
- Centre controlled the third set from the jump, grabbing the early lead and never looking back. A tandem block by Mackenzie Turner and Syd Bietz gave the Colonels their biggest lead of ten points before they cruised to a 25-18 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- The fourth set was the closest of the day as Centre held a small lead throughout, but never by more than three points. Leading 23-21, Swartz and Emily Gardner combined for a block to put the Colonels at match point, and then a Bietz kill closed the door on a 25-21 win for the Colonels.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Bietz led all players with 17 kills on the day. Swartz added ten kills while hitting an excellent .529 for the match.
