Colonel duo nets three goals to beat Piedmont

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's soccer team (2-1) faced off in the final match of their Labor Day weekend on Monday, taking on Piedmont (0-3-1) in a showdown under the Amend Field lights. The Colonels powered past the Lions with a three-goal advantage, earning their second win of the year shutting out the Lions.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Gold & White pressured Piedmont heavily on offense in the first 11 minutes of the contest, Centre taking three corner kicks and three shots during that timeframe.
- The Lions were able to take the first shot on goal in the game, placing an attempt on the bottom-right side of the cage that was stopped by Centre keeper Anna Thomas.
- Cara Francke took the first shot-on-goal of the contest for Centre in the 19th minute of action, Lydia Bowling placing on in the bottom-left side of the net just three minutes later.
- The Colonels' next shot on goal made its mark, Lilly Zehnder nailing a shot to push the Gold & White ahead. Her score in the 32nd minute of play was topped by another seven minutes later, placing her second goal of the night off a rebounded shot from Alli Helmes.
- Centre already hot in their offensive gameplan didn't put away the brakes coming out of halftime, Bella Nelson notching the game's third and final goal off an assist from Annabel Justice in the 50th minute of action.
- The Lions aimed one more shot on goal to try and get on the board against Centre in the 78th minute, of place, but Thomas kept the shutout alive with a save off the topside of the net.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Zehnder's night was one to remember, her two goals being both her first and second career scores in a Centre uniform.
- Thomas' first career start at Colonels' goalkeeper on Monday notched several other career milestones with a career-high in saves in a single game and her first complete shutout.
- The Gold & White's 27 shots marked a single-game high in the young 2023 season, the last time they surpassed 25 was the SAA Tournament Quarterfinal against Oglethorpe (30).
- Centre capped the weekend with keeping their opponents off the corners, only allowing four in total over the three games to start the season.
