Centre basketball comeback falls short at Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – Centre men's basketball ended its seven-game road trip with a game against the Millsaps Majors on Sunday afternoon. After falling behind by 16 in the first half, the Colonels clawed back to cut the deficit to two in the closing minutes, but failed to get over the hump as Millsaps got the win by a score of 86-81.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

- The Majors delivered the first blow as they outscored Centre 15-1 over a five-minute stretch in the first half to take the largest lead of the game at 23-7, putting the Colonels in a big hole.
- Centre responded with the next nine points as Cade Stinnett and Landen Hamilton keyed the rally to get it back to single digits halfway through the half.
- Late in the half, the Colonels caught fire from three as Hamilton, Blake Stewart and Jaxson Banks all connected from long distance to cut the Millsaps lead to four, but a last-second three from the Majors kept the home team up 44-37 at the break.
- Millsaps extended the lead back to double digits in the early stages of the second half, taking a 60-48 edge at the 14-minute mark.
- The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before Centre made their next big push. Stinnett made a pair of free throws. Chez Moore crashed the glass and scored on a putback. Stinnett drove to the rack for a bucket and a foul, and his free throw made it 71-69 with six minutes left.
- The Majors scored the next six and looked to have it wrapped up, but they missed a few late free throws and gave Centre a chance. Banks converted a rare four-point play to make it 84-81 and then Centre got the ball right back with 30 seconds left following an offensive foul, but the Colonels were unable to score and Millsaps iced it away at the line.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Stinnett led all players with 25 points, his second straight game of 25 or more.
- After scoring a career high 32 Friday at BSC, Hamilton stuffed the stat sheet again with 21 points, four assists and a career high five steals.
- Banks equaled his career high with a dozen points off the bench.
