Battle in the Bluegrass a strong showing for Centre swimming & diving

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Battle in the Bluegrass finished on Saturday with multiple team and individual wins for the Centre swimming & diving Colonels in battles with John Carroll and DePauw.

The women defeated JCU 164-79 and DePauw 99-86. The men's team rebounded from a 151-86 setback to JCU with a 110-75 win over DePauw. 

Avery Gabbard, Natalie Cox, Katelynn Stanczyk, and Callie West led the way for the women in the first meet on Saturday versus JCU with three wins each between relays and individual victories. 

Gabbard and Cox were part of a 400 medley relay, that also included Claire Ackerman and Caroline Short, that won in 4:06.79. Stanczyk and West joined Gabbard and Olivia Headley in the 400 freestyle relay and won in 3:41.02. The final win for Gabbard came in the 200 backstroke (2:11.98). 

Other individual wins for that group included Cox in the 200 breaststroke (2:31.72), Stanczyk in the 500 freestyle (5:24.35), and West in the 100 freestyle (53.70). 

For three of those multiple event winners they won their event in both meets on the day. Stanczyk won the 200 freestyle in both meets (1:58.57, 1:59.24), West took the 50 freestyle in each meet (24.27, 24.60), and Cox won the 200 IM (2:15.68, 2:13.35) in both competitions. 

Two more individual winners came in the first meet. Sarah Feild won the 1000 freestyle in 10:58.35 and Sara Jean Postle won the three-meter dive in 210.30. 

The second meet for the women also saw wins for Cox in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.63), West in the 100 butterfly (58.61), and Erin Dannemiller in the one-meter dive (195.44). 

On the men's side, Brady Miller won the 1000 freestyle (9:51.80) yet again, this time in the first meet, and is still undefeated in the event so far in his collegiate career. The freshman also won the 500 freestyle in both Saturday meets with times of 4:47.52 and 4:46.30, respectively. He then added a 200 freestyle (1:46.61) win in the second meet. 

The lone other multiple event winner for Centre in the first meet was diver Rowan Fitzsimmons. He won the one-meter dive with a tally of 223.42 and the three-meter dive with a score of 306.15. 

Xavier Moore took first in the 100 yard freestyle in 49.11 in the second meet of the day. Tiernan Moore added to the Colonel effort by touching the wall first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.28. Two more swimming wins came versus DePauw. Ben Camp won the 100 butterfly (55.46) and Dustin Niebauer took the top spot in the 100 backstroke (56.27). 

Avery Balch won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 301.34.

FRIDAY RECAP
Centre swimming & diving started the Battle in the Bluegrass with a bang as both squads defeated the University of Lynchburg in the first of three meets this weekend. 
 
The women took down the Hornets 177-60, while the men won by a tally of 144-93. 
 
The women of the Gold & White had another great performance in the pool. Centre had 10 women earn wins on Friday night between individual race wins and relay wins. 

Avery Gabbard led the way with three wins. She was part of the 200 medley relay with Natalie Cox, Callie West, and Olivia Headley that won in 1:49.35. The freshman also took a win in the 200 freestyle in 2:00.59 and the 100 backstroke in 1:01.38. 

Three more women had two wins each. West added to her win in the 200 medley relay with a win in the 100 freestyle (53.45). Cate Coartney and Sarah Feild each earned one win as part of the winning 800 freestyle relay (8:11.60) alongside Caroline Short and Katelynn Stanczyk. Coartney added an individual win in the 400 IM (4:47.41) while Feild got her other win in the 500 freestyle (5:24.09). 

Two more Colonel women won. Anneliese Thomas won in 11:27.75 in the 1000 freestyle and Claire Ackerman won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.83. 
 
Jackson Fears led the way for the men's team, which had six different winners on Friday. His first win came in the 200 freestyle that he won in 1:49.03, which was less than a second faster than second place. He later went on to win the 100 freestyle in 48.74. His final win came as part of the 800 freestyle relay that also featured Dustin Niebauer, Jake Holmes, and Ben Wafford and finished in 7:19.39. 

Fantastic Freshman Brady Miller continued his impressive start to his collegiate career with two more wins. He won the 1000 freestyle in 9:49.04, which kept his undefeated streak alive in that event. He also took first in the 500 freestyle in 4:49.05, which was good enough for an NCAA B cut. 

Tiernan Moore added another win for the Centre win. He won the 100 breaststroke in 58.59.

Centre hosts a double dual in a week with Franklin and Hanover. That meet will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
