Centre football lands 17 on All-SAA squads

11/22/2024 12:00:00 PM

ATLANTA – The Southern Athletic Association released its postseason awards for the 2024 football season and 17 members of the conference tri-champion Centre Colonels were named to the All-SAA squads.

Quarterback Jack Gohmann was voted the top signal caller in the conference by the league's coaches, earning All-SAA First Team honors. Gohmann led the conference in nearly every statistical category for quarterbacks, finishing the regular season with 2,656 yards, a .636 completion percentage and 31 total touchdowns – 29 through the air as Centre led the SAA in passing offense.

Three members of Centre's talented receiving corps received all-conference honors with All-SAA Second Team Blake Busson and All-SAA Honorable Mentions Scotty Brown and Travis Maufer.

Busson tied for the team lead with 40 catches and led the Colonels with 700 receiving yards. He scored six touchdowns on the year and his 80-yard score against Berry was the longest play from scrimmage for Centre this season.

Brown earned All-SAA honors for the second time this season as the senior captain also finished with 40 catches and tied for the team lead with eight touchdowns as he has remained a major red zone threat for his entire career.

Spending time at both wide receiver and H-back, Maufer started all ten games in his junior season and caught 21 passes for 238 yards. His two catches on the opening drive against Trinity set the tone for a 24-12 Centre victory.

The offensive line had a pair of all-conference honorees with All-SAA First Teamer Aiden Jackson and Second Teamer Jake Nash. Jackson has graded out as Centre's top offensive lineman each of the last three seasons and has earned All-SAA First Team honors in all of those seasons.

After playing center his first two seasons, Nash moved next to Jackson at right tackle for his junior campaign and earned his first All-SAA recognition. Together they formed the right side of an offensive line that improved in the running games as the season progressed and led the conference in fewest sacks allowed.

On defense, the Colonels had three linemen make the all-conference squads with Second Teamer Adam Wicktom and Honorable Mentions Ryan Pyles and Wyatt Fowler.

Wicktom had a productive first season as a starter at defensive end as he finished with 25 tackles and ranked third on the team in both tackles for loss and sacks. His best game was at Southwestern, where he finished with eight tackles, 2.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks.

Pyles lined up opposite Wicktom in his first year as a starter and the senior defensive end was solid against the run, racking up eight tackles and 0.5 TFL against Hampden-Sydney.

Fowler gained muscle in the offseason and the sophomore moved from the secondary to defensive end, finishing with 15 tackles, two TFL and a pass breakup.

The linebacking corps had a pair of Second Team All-SAA Seniors in Evan Elder and JJ Jones.

Elder switched numbers to coordinator Carter Conley's no. 13 jersey and had a fantastic senior season, his second straight All-SAA honor. He led the Colonels with 52 tackles while recording eight TFL and 4.5 sacks. His best game came on Senior Day as he recorded eight solo tackles, three TFL, two sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery to help Centre clinch a share of the conference title with a win over Sewanee.

Jones missed a pair of games in September and came back from the bye week with a vengeance as one of the best linebackers in the league during conference play. He finished with 38 tackles, four TFL, 2.5 sacks, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in his first season as a starter, lining up alongside Elder to give the Colonels one of the best inside linebacker duos in the region.

The Colonels had their highest number of All-SAA honorees in the secondary with First Teamer Mario Brewer Jr. and Honorable Mentions Nick Grant, Parker Guillaume and Jamikel James.

Brewer made a major impact on the defense on day one as the sophomore transfer recorded three sacks in each of the first two games of the season. He lined up all over the field on defense and led the Colonels with 8.5 sacks and 11 TFL while finishing with 40 total tackles, three pass breakups, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Now in his fourth year as a starter, Grant was reliable as usual in the secondary, ranking second in the SAA with 12 pass breakups. The fifth-year senior ranked second on the team with 42 tackles, added 3.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks, and returned a fumble for a touchdown against Maryville.

James started all ten games at cornerback in his senior season, finishing with 36 tackles, 2.5 TFL and five pass breakups. James iced Centre's win over Hendrix with his first career interception and then picked off another pass in the regular season finale against Sewanee.

Despite missing three games in his senior season, Guillaume still finished with 26 tackles, two TFL and four pass breakups. His eight tackles in the win over Southwestern were a career high.

Finally, both of Centre's specialists received All-SAA honors with Second Teamer Cam Tegge and Honorable Mention Will Boehm.

Tegge earned his third All-SAA nod of his career after going a perfect 7-for-7 on field goals this season. His 46-yard field goal at the halftime buzzer against Millsaps was a career long kick, and he was named SAA Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on a walk-off field goal to defeat Maryville.

It is the first career All-SAA honor for Boehm, as the sophomore punter averaged just under 40 yards per punt in 41 kicks. He booted six punts of 50 yards or more – including a career long 60-yarder against Hendrix – and his punts pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 13 times.

Centre football will open the NCAA Playoffs with a road game against Carnegie Mellon on Nov. 30.
