Centre women win Speedo Midseason Invite, men finish third

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre swimming & diving team finished the Speedo Midseason Invitational with a win on the women's side and a third-place showing and three broken records for the men. 
 
The Colonel women won the biggest meet in the young history of Champions Hall with a tally of 2670.5. The Centre men stayed in third place and finished the weekend with a team score of 1839. The field featured squads from NCAA Divisions II and III as well as the NAIA. 

Centre had three different women win individual events with two more part of relay wins. Claire Ackerman was the first woman in Gold & White to win thanks to a 100 IM finish in 1:00.29. 

Avery Gabbard and Callie West each picked up one individual win and were both part of a winning 400 freestyle relay. Gabbard touched the wall first in the 200 backstroke and secured a time of 2:05.99, while West won the 100 freestyle in 51.92. The 400 medley relay, which also featured Katelynn Stanczyk and Olivia Headley, finished with a winning time of 3:31.99. 

The men saw three program records fall on Sunday. Avery Balch broke his second record in as many days with a 546.5 tally after 11 attempts in the three-meter dive. Brandon Anderson (507.95) finished second in that event and Garrett George (506.60) came in third. 

Brady Miller added two more records to his impressive freshman season. He broke the 1650 freestyle best with a 15:53.81 that put him second in the A final. His time at the 1000 mark (9:35.77) also broke the program record the Versailles, Ky. native earned earlier this season.
 
SATURDAY RECAP
The Colonel women moved into the lead above the other 9 teams. The Centre men advanced one spot and took third place heading into the final day. The field features squads from NCAA Divisions II and III as well as the NAIA. 

The men were led by an impressive showing all around in the one-meter dive. Avery Balch broke the Gold & White school record in his win with a score of 567.25 in the 11-dive event. Rowan Fitzsimmons came in second with a score of 522.95 and Garrett George followed in third with a tally of 507.9. 

Senior Callie West was the lone winner for the Centre women. She secured a victory in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.08. 

Two relays were silver medal worthy for the Colonel women. Avery Gabbard, Natalie Cox, West, and Olivia Headley scored second in the 200 medley relay in 1:46.73. The 800 freestyle relay also finished second thanks to Katelynn Stanczyk, Headley, Cate Coartney, and West wrapping up in 7:50.92. 

Stanczyk and Gabbard also found the podium in individual events. Stanczyk was second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.73) and Gabbard finished in the same position in the 100 backstroke (58.61). 

The other two podium finishers were Claire Ackerman in the 100 breaststroke who finished second in 1:06.64 and Sophie Anderson who finished third in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.11.
 
FRIDAY RECAP
The Colonel women finished the day in second out of 10 teams. The men wrapped up day one fourth out of 11 squads. 
 
Two NCAA B cuts were achieved, as well as a school record broken, by senior Callie West. The Lexington, Ky. broke the school record in the 100 backstroke, and earned a B cut, with a leadoff time of 56.41 in the 400 medley relay. That relay also won with a time of 3:53.98 and also featured Natalie Cox, Claire Ackerman, and Olivia Headley

West added another B cut in the 50 freestyle with a winning time of 23.43. 

The other winning event for the women of the Gold & White was the 200 freestyle relay. Katelynn Stanczyk, Ackerman, Headley, and West teamed up to win in 1:36.69. 

Brady Miller had the highest finish of the day for the men. He finished third in the 500 freestyle final and touched the wall in 4:37.73.

The Colonels are on break until January. The Centre program will return to the pool on Friday, Jan. 10 for the first of two days of the Colonel Classic in Danville.
