Colonels' second half push downs Cougars in season opener

DANVILLE, Va. – On Friday evening, the Centre women's basketball team traveled to Virginia for their 2024-25 season opener. Taking on Averett, the Colonels secured a 1-0 start to the season as they bettered the Cougars 73-57.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Cougars jumped out to an early five-point lead but the Colonels swiftly shrunk the gap thanks to a trio of made free throws from Emma Perna. Averett answered with another offensive push, stretching their lead to as much as 14 with an 11-0 run. A long ball from Ryleigh Campbell cut the deficit to single digits but the Cougars remained nine ahead entering quarter two.
- The second frame opened at a slow pace, Lindsay Jessie netting the only basket in the opening four minutes. The Cougars eventually answered with a singular lay-up but fell silent for the remainder of the half. Trailing away with 17 unanswered points, the Colonels possessed an eight-point lead (33-25) entering the break.
- Out of halftime, the two teams swapped points, each tallying 19 in the ten minutes. As both teams struggle from long range, Centre found their points at the line while Averett favored from the paint. Entering the final period, the Colonels led 52-44.
