Softball falls in season-opening contests

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre softball team started the 2024 season on Saturday with a pair of contests with Maryville College. The Colonels fell 10-1 in the first game and 10-7 in the second.

Saturday's result moved the Gold & White record to 0-2 and the record for the Scots to 2-0.

GAME ONE: Centre 1, Maryville 10 (6 innings)
- In the second inning the Colonels put up the first home run of the early season courtesy of Emily Lammers. She homered to left field to lead off the bottom of the second and tie the game 1-1.
- Down 3-1, Centre tallied the second and final Colonel hit of the contest. Layne Ogle hit a single to center field to arrive on base.
- Despite being down 10-1 there was still hope for Centre in the bottom of the sixth. Cheney Floyd came in to pinch hit, with the Colonels one out from being defeated, and walked. Unfortunately, Centre was unable to rally and fell in the first game.
- Lucy Baseheart was the starting pitcher for the Gold & White and struck out two batters. Ogle came in for the final two thirds of the contest and allowed no earned runs.

GAME TWO: Centre 7, Maryville 10

- Centre started out the second contest of the day strong. After Madalyn Irwin singled and Floyd walked, Kaylee Gregory hit a single down the right field line to send Irwin home. Gregory then stole second and Lammers was hit by a pitch. Floyd then scored on a Andrea Searcy ground out to make the score 2-0 Colonels.
- Maryville answered back in the top of the second with an RBI double to pull back within one.
- The Gold & White tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second. After a Sam Rogers double and an Irwin walk, Floyd hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Gregory came up to bat next and hit a two-RBI single up the middle.
- It was the Scots who scored next when a single with the bases loaded sent two Maryville runners across home to cut the home team's lead to 4-3.
- Centre added padding to the lead after two singles, and a fly out in the bottom of the fourth placed runners on first and second. Gregory hit a single to score Rylie Bentley who was on third.
- Unfortunately for the Colonels, the Scots scored seven runs between the fifth and seventh innings with no immediate answer from the Centre squad.
 - A valiant effort by the Gold & White in the bottom of the sixth led to two runs scoring. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Centre. An error by Maryville's third baseman scored one run for the Colonels and then an Ogle single scored another. The MC lead was cut to 10-7 after the scores, but the visiting Scots held on and won the game.
- Searcy pitched six and one third innings and struck out five batters. Lydia Rice pitched two thirds of an inning and allowed no earned runs.
