Softball splits midweek tilt with Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. – Centre softball went an even 1-1 on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader with the Quakers of Earlham College with a loss of 1-0 and a win of 10-4.

The Colonels return home with a 7-14 overall record after the split.

GAME ONE: Earlham 1, Centre 0
- The first game of the afternoon was a true pitcher's dual as only one run was scored and just six hits were tallied.
- In the third inning, Kaylee Gregory earned the first hit of the game. The senior singled to the pitcher's mound.
- Centre had back-to-back singles in the top of the fourth courtesy of Emily Lammers and Morgan Tabor
- The lone run scored in the fourth inning when a Quaker hit an RBI double to center field.
- Gregory hit another single in the fifth, this time to center field, in hopes of getting some momentum for the Gold & White. Rylie Bentley had the final hit of the game in the seventh frame with a double to right field, but it was not enough as the Colonels fell 1-0 in the first contest.
- Andrea Searcy pitched the full six innings and had a career-high 10 strikeouts. She was in the circle for 17 at-bats and surrendered just one run.

GAME TWO: Centre 10, Earlham 4
- The second game of the day could not have been any more different than the first as Centre had an offensive explosion in the Wednesday finale.
- Caroline Unruh walked to start the first inning and was followed by Madalyn Irwin who hit a single. The bases were loaded, after a sacrifice bunt by Lammers, when Tabor hit a single to third. A dropped fly sent Unruh home and then a Rylie Bentley scored one more.
- Earlham scored its first run on an error in the bottom of the second inning.
- The Colonels scored again with a sacrifice bunt from Layne Ogle scoring Lammers in the third but the Quakers answered back in the next half inning on an RBI single.
- Unruh, who reached on a fielder's choice, and Irwin who reached on an error, moved the Centre lead to 5-2. It built again in the top of the fifth when Ogle hit a lead off triple followed by an RBI single from Bentley and an RBI double from Gregory.
- After Earlham scored in the bottom of the fifth, the Gold & White added two more runs. A Tabor triple scored Irwin who had walked to start the frame. A Ogle single followed and scored Tabor.
- With the score sitting at 9-4 the Colonels scored the final run of the game. Gregory was on second after a single and ground out. Lydia Rice hit an RBI single to center field which sent Gregory across home.
- Mia Tomillo got the start in the circle and pitched two innings. Lucy Baseheart got the win after five innings of action where she struck out six batters.
