Softball falls in first game, wins close game two

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre softball split with Ohio Wesleyan University with a 10-3 loss in the first game and an extra innings triumph of 6-5 in the second contest.

The Colonels are now holders of double-digit wins with a 10-15 overall record after the split doubleheader.

GAME ONE: Ohio Wesleyan 10, Centre 3
- An error, three singles, and a score on a ground out put the Battling Bishops up 5-0 at the halfway point of the second inning.
- With the bases loaded thanks to two walks and a Rylie Bentley single, Izzy Rushing hit a two RBI double to left field to cut the Gold & White's deficit to just three runs.
- Three extra-base hits in the top of the fourth gave Ohio Wesleyan an 8-2 lead. The visitors then had another two extra-base hits in the top of the sixth to build the lead to 10-2.
- Cheney Floyd hit a single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth to give Centre some life. Morgan Tabor hit a sacrifice bunt next that moved Floyd to second. Emily Lammers was next at-bat and hit an RBI double that scored Floyd.
- Abby Duncan led the comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single, but the offense failed to add another run in the 10-3 loss.
- Lydia Rice got the start in the circle for the Colonels and pitched one and two-thirds innings. Lucy Baseheart pitched the final five and one-thirds innings and struck out five.

GAME TWO: Centre 6, Ohio Wesleyan 5 (9 innings)
- No runs scored for either team in the first two innings but Centre tallied a hit in each. Lammers had a double to right center in the first inning while Bentley tallied a single to the same spot in the second frame.
- The Battling Bishops scored first with two runs added to the scoreboard in the top of the third.
- It was an immediate answer from the Gold & White in the bottom of the frame. A Lammers single to second scored Caroline Unruh who reached on a single of her own earlier in the inning. A ground out to second then allowed Floyd to come home.
- Centre took the lead in the bottom of the fourth after a Layne Ogle single scored Bentley who had led off the inning with a single.
- The teams added two runs each in the fifth frame. Centre's scores came thanks to RBI singles by Bentley and Ogle.
- Ohio Wesleyan then tied the game in the top of the sixth at 5-5. That deadlock led to extra innings in Danville.
- The Colonels, with Andrea Searcy placed on second per extra-inning rules, won the contest in the ninth inning. Regan Brownley hit a single to right center and was able to get to second on the throw. A fielder's choice on a Layne Ogle chance allowed Searcy to score the winning run in the 6-5 victory.
- Mia Tomillo was given the pitching start but due to lineup shifts did not actually throw a pitch until the fifth inning. Searcy pitched the first four and two third innings and struck out two. Baseheart pitched the final four innings and earned the win after striking out four and allowing no runs and just one hit.
