JACKSON, Miss. – Centre softball fell in both games of a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) doubleheader with setbacks of 5-1 and 4-3 to host Millsaps College.
The Colonels fell to 10-17 overall and 3-8 in the SAA after the Friday contests.
GAME ONE: Millsaps 5, Centre 1
- The Majors scored first thanks to an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
- Centre's first hit of the game was a double to right field by
Abby Duncan in the top of the third frame. That was followed by a
Hailey Watson single where she advanced to second. The first run for the visitors was next as
Izzy Rushing reached first thanks to a fielder's choice and Duncan scored on an error by the second baseman.
- A deadlock score of 1-1 held until the bottom of the fourth inning when an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly moved Millsaps ahead 3-1.
- Watson tallied another single in the fifth, but a double play stopped the offensive momentum.
- Two more runs came for the home side in the bottom of that inning thanks to a runner stealing home and an RBI single.
-
Cheney Floyd and
Kaylee Gregory each tallied one hit before the game closed, but the Colonels rally never got going in the 5-1 loss.
-
Mia Tomillo got the pitching start for the Gold & White and went three innings. She struck out two and allowed three earned runs.
Lucy Baseheart pitched the final three frames and had a season-high eight strikeouts with two earned runs.
GAME TWO: Millsaps 4, Centre 3 (9 innings)
- The second game started with the Centre offense on display.
Caroline Unruh walked to start the contest and Duncan hit a double to left center to put both runners in scoring position. Floyd walked next to load the bases.
Emily Lammers came up next and hit a single to left field that scored the runners on second and third.
- A home run for the Majors, with one runner already on, tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
- The Colonels answered immediately with a
Rylie Bentley double sending
Morgan Tabor across home plate.
- After several scoreless innings, Millsaps tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly after back-to-back singles and a walk.
- Centre had runners reach base in extra-innings but not via hit. It was the Majors who prevailed in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off RBI double to left field.
-
Andrea Searcy got the start in the circle and went seven and one-third innings. She struck out five and allowed three earned runs. Baseheart pitched the final inning and a third and allowed just one run.
