Late rally lifts Centre past Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.- On Friday afternoon, the women's lacrosse team hit the road for their final travel contest of the regular season. Outscoring the Knights 12-6 in the second half, Centre women's lacrosse completed the comeback to win 18-16.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The contest opened with the Knights registering the only goal in the initial ten minutes of play. Nearing the three-minute mark, Centre's Haley Rice evened the score with an unassisted goal and for the remainder of the frame, the two quads matched each other point for point. With two late goals from Emma Botts and Ellie Macdonald, the score read a tie at 3-3 entering period two. 
- Southern Virginia(SVU) quickly stole the lead with a 3-0 run to open the next quarter. Riley Jackson's free position was the first of three goals for the Colonels. Botts followed minutes later while Macdonald's score closed the half. Netting seven compared to Centre's three, the Knights led 10-6 entering the break. 
- Out of halftime, the Colonels initiated their comeback. Gracie Garner opened the half with the feed from Ella Treinen. The Knights answered but just after, the Gold & White registered three goals in just 90-seconds to make it a one-point game. SVU tallied two in a row before Botts commenced a 5-1 scoring run for the Colonels. With notable goals from both Rice and Gahm, Centre tied it up at 14-14 with just one period to go. 
- The scoring runs continued into the final frame, the Colonels trailing off with three unanswered points in Isa Stumpf, Trienen, and Rice. The Knights would register two late goals but a padding point from Rice solidified the score at Centre 18, SVU 16. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rice fronted the Colonels in goals with six. Botts followed with four while Jackson and Macdonald netted two apiece.
- Jackson led Centre in draw control possessions with five. 
- Leah Jackson tied for the game's leader in caused turnovers with two.
- In goal, Mary Haley collected a career high of 11 saves. She led the Colonels to a favorable 13-15 clears. 
- Centre bettered SVU in ground balls, clears, and saves.

UP NEXT
Women's lacrosse will return home for their next contest. They'll host SAA's Sewanee on Saturday April 13thfor their 2024 Senior Day game.
