Roanoke bests Colonels in second-half battle

SALEM, Va. – Centre field hockey remained in Virginia for the second game of their opening weekend tilt. Facing the Maroons, the Colonels found their first goal of the season in Emily Ritchie, but Roanoke ultimately won by a score of 2-1.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS  

- The first half revealed and evenly matched draw with neither team placing a goal. The Maroons favored in shots taken but remained scoreless thanks to a save from goalkeeper Carlie McKenry. Heading into halftime, the score remained tied at 0-0.
- Out of the break, Roanoke struck first, tallying the first goal of the game six minutes into the second half. Just one minute later, Ritchie answered with the Colonels' first goal of the season. Sending the ball back to cage off a save, the game returned to a tie at 1-1. 
- Opening the fourth quarter, the Colonels found several corner opportunities but were unable to capitalize. In the final six minutes, the Maroons notched their second goal to take the late lead. When time ran out, the score read Roanoke two, Centre one.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE  
- The Maroons favored in shots taken, having ten to Centre's seven. Ritchie claimed the Colonels' singular goal while Claire Martin fronted the team in shots taken with two.  
- In goal, McKenry collected three saves.  
- Each team was awarded four penalty corner opportunities.
