ROME, Ga. – Centre volleyball played two of the toughest teams in the state of Georgia on Saturday as they competed in the Viking Classic at Berry. After losing to no. 6 Emory in straight sets, the Colonels picked up their second victory of the season over the Covenant Scots in four sets.
Game 1: Emory 3, Centre 0
- The Colonels played the no. 6 Eagles tough in the opening set before Emory took control with a run of six straight points. Emory scored the final five points as well to take a 25-13 win.
- The second set played out in a similar fashion as the first as the Eagles broke an early tie with five straight points and never looked back, gradually extending their lead and again scoring the final five points to win by a score of 25-14.
- In the third set, Emory utilized runs of 8-1 and 9-0 to break things open, grabbing the lead with the first run and creating the cushion with the second one as they won 25-13.
Game 2: Centre 3, Covenant 1
- The Colonels grabbed the lead from the jump in their second match against Covenant this season as they got off to a 10-4 lead and never trailed, never letting Covenant get closer than five the rest of the way.
Hollye Tate put home the final kill on a solid 25-19 victory for Centre.
- The second set was a close one throughout with Centre taking a small lead and keeping the Scots at bay. Leading 23-19,
Syd Bietz delivered consecutive kills for another 25-19 win for the Colonels.
- The Scots stayed alive in the third set as they used a 9-1 run to turn a four-point deficit into a four-point lead and held on for a 25-21 victory.
- Centre and Covenant played their closest set of the match in the fourth as the Scots battled back late to force a tie at 21-21. From there,
Delia Long scored two of Centre's next three points on a tandem block and an ace, and Bietz again came through in the clutch to secure the 25-22 win with the final kill.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Bietz led all players with 14 kills against Covenant, followed by
Mack Turner with ten.

Emily Gardner had another double digit assists per set night against Covenant, finishing with 45, 11 more than Covenant had as a team.

June Padilla and
Amery Galan each hit career highs in digs with respective totals of 34 and 21.

The Colonels will return to action on Sept. 24 with a home matchup against the Asbury Eagles.
