DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's basketball went back and forth with the visiting Rhodes Lynx on Sunday afternoon, staging a furious rally in the final two minutes against a nine-point deficit before falling by a score of 72-68.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Both teams came out extremely cold, as it took Rhodes almost three minutes and Centre almost five minutes to dent the scoreboard.
- Centre grabbed a 7-6 lead after a steal and score from
Landen Hamilton with eight minutes gone by, but that was the last time the Colonels led during the first half.
- Rhodes controlled most of the final ten minutes of the half, leading by as many as eight points. The Colonels hung tough and a putback by
Nolan Wahl was the final basket of the half as Centre faced a 33-28 deficit at halftime.
- After trading baskets for a few minutes to start the second half, Centre blitzed Rhodes with a huge run, outscoring the Lynx 14-2. Hamilton scored nine of the 14 points during the rally – including a four-point play – to put Centre back on top by a score of 46-39.
- Following the under-12 media timeout, it was the Lynx's turn to go on a run as they took advantage of a few Centre miscues to score ten straight, taking the lead at 54-53 with seven minutes left.
- The two teams traded the lead a few more times before Rhodes outscored Centre 13-4 to take a 70-61 lead with just under two minutes remaining.
- Centre cut into the deficit following free throws from
Jaxson Banks and
Ryan Shene. The Colonels pressed on defense and Banks got a steal and a three to make it 70-66. Three consecutive missed free throws by the Lynx gave Centre life and Hamilton got to the rack and scored to cut the lead to two, but that was as close as it got as Rhodes made a pair of free throws with three seconds to go to seal the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Hamilton had his best statistical game of the season, finishing three points shy of a career high with 29 points. Banks was the only other Centre player to finish in double figures, scoring ten.
- Centre held a 43-32 edge on the glass thanks to 11 rebounds each from Wahl and Shene.
