DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in conference play as great defense and timely shooting lifted the Colonels to a 63-52 victory over the Rhodes Lynx on Sunday afternoon.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The opening quarter belonged to both defenses as the Colonels and Lynx had a tough time putting the ball in the basket.
Ka'Niah Edelen and
Lilly Reid scored the final baskets of the period in the closing minutes to give Centre a 10-8 lead.
- Rhodes played well to start the second period as the Lynx took their biggest lead of the game at 15-12 just two minutes into the quarter. With both offenses still struggling, Centre turned defense to offense as
Anna Thomas got a steal and score to put the Colonels back on top. After Rhodes again went up by three, Centre chipped away at the free throw line and Edelen converted a three-point play in the final seconds to put Centre ahead 24-21 at the break.
- In the third quarter, the offenses began to show signs of life as
Bailey Rucker took over, scoring 13 points in the quarter to keep the Colonels out in front. The Colonels continued to turn defense and hustle into points as Edelen crashed the offensive glass and found Thomas for a three to put Centre ahead by double digits for the first time at 44-34 to end the quarter.
- The Colonels added to their lead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as Thomas connected on another three to cap off a 10-3 run and give Centre its largest lead of the game at 16 points. The Lynx could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Edelen helped ice the game for Centre at the free throw line.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- For the second game in a row, Rucker scored 24 points to lead all scorers, as her 13 points in the third quarter equaled Rhodes's team total. Edelen had her best game of the season with 13 points, while Reid added 12 and Thomas finished with ten.
- Turnovers played a huge role in today's outcome as Centre forced 16 Rhodes turnovers while only committing seven. The Colonels enjoyed a 21-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
