DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre football team returns to action at
Andy Frye Stadium for the first time in three weeks and will be celebrating milestone anniversaries of conference championship teams at halftime of their game against Millsaps on Saturday.
The Colonels will be honoring the 40th anniversary of the Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team of 1985 as well as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team of 1995 at halftime.
The 1985 Colonels won five of their final six games to tie for the Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, finishing 3-1 in the conference and 6-3 overall. Five players from that title team have gone on to be enshrined in the Centre Athletics Hall of Fame, including All-Americans Teel Bruner, John Gohmann and Jeff Leonard, while kicker Ken Willis went on to play professionally for the Dallas Cowboys. Head coach Joe McDaniel was also inducted into the Centre Athletics Hall of Fame.Â
In 1995, the Centre football team rode a powerful rushing attack and stout defense to a share of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title. The Colonels swept the major awards in the SCAC that year with Offensive Player of the Year Kris Garrett, Defensive Player of the Year Zach Woods and Co-Coach of the Year Joe McDaniel. Garrett joined Montas Allen and Clay Curry as Centre Athletics Hall of Fame players from that team.Â
The Colonels will kick off against Millsaps at 1 PM on Saturday. Centre will be looking to get a victory in their conference opener and win their fifth straight over the Majors.
