MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Centre football team hit the road to battle a Maryville Scots team that was receiving votes in this week's AFCA Top 25 poll. The game was tied at the half, but the second half belonged to Maryville, who won 33-13.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The two teams traded punts for the first three series of the game. On Maryville's second drive, the Scots hit a pair of long passes to reach the red zone and eventually scored from 12 yards out to take a 7-0 lead.
- A good kickoff return by
Tyler Blythe set the Colonels up just shy of midfield.
Jack Gohmann connected with
Blake Busson on a long ball to get to the Maryville 5 and on the next play, Gohmann hit
Travis Maufer over the middle for a touchdown. The extra point was no good and Centre trailed 7-6 after one quarter.
- The Scots went on a long drive to start the second quarter and converted a key fourth down on the way to a touchdown, but they missed the extra point, so the lead was 13-6.
- After a Centre punt, Maryville looked to go up by two scores as they crossed the 50, but on fourth down from the Centre 40,
Seandre Maxberry and
Temes Kahsay stopped the Scots in their tracks and set up Centre with a short field.
- Centre took quick advantage of the field position as after a personal foul penalty by the Scots, Gohmann and Busson connected four times to cover 45 yards, with the last one coming from eight yards out for the tying touchdown.
- Maryville threatened to score going into the break, but
Will Nichols forced a fumble for the second game in a row as
Mario Brewer Jr. fell on the ball to preserve a 13-13 tie at the half.
- In the third quarter, Maryville embarked on an 89-yard drive that relied on the intermediate passing game to reach the end zone and retake the lead at 20-13.
- The Colonels flipped the field thanks to some strong punts by
Will Boehm and began their march to tie the game as the fourth quarter began. Centre reached the red zone on a long strike to
Dant Bowling and faced 3rd & goal from the 2, but a touchdown by
Clint Sansbury was nullified by a holding penalty, forcing the Colonels to attempt a field goal, which was blocked to keep the score at 20-13.
- On the next Maryville drive, the Scots finally spring free for a long run, scoring from 66 yards out to make it a 27-13 game. Maryville effectively put the game away with three minutes to go on an interception return for a touchdown.
